Daniel Thomas Flavin

May 31, 1957 ~ June 6, 2024

Daniel (“Dan”) Thomas Flavin (67) passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2024 with his loving wife, children, and family at his side.

Dan was born in Joliet, IL on May 31, 1957 to William and Marilyn (Condon) Flavin.

Dan flourished as the fourth of eight children in an active Irish Catholic family, spending his early years in Joliet. He graduated from St. Patrick Elementary School and attended Joliet Catholic High School as a freshman, where he played football as a running back before his family moved to Lake Charles in the summer of 1972. Dan graduated from Alfred M. Barbe High School and attended McNeese State University in Lake Charles where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

Dan was married to the love of his life, Lisa (Jones) Flavin at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church on January 12, 1980 in Lake Charles. Dan and Lisa raised their family of six children as very involved members of the Lake Charles community. Their connections to Our Lady Queen of Heaven Parish and St. Louis Catholic High School were the foundational cornerstones of their lives as they raised their family.

Dan’s professional career spanned decades building and leading Flavin Realty, Inc. into the preeminent real estate firm in Southwest Louisiana. As a realtor, Dan was a past chairman of the Louisiana Real Estate Commission and past president of the Greater Calcasieu Board of Realtors. Dan received the “Realtor of the Year” award in Calcasieu Parish on two separate occasions. Dan was active with the National Association of Realtors and Louisiana Realtors Association, where he also served as trustee. Dan is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Pioneer Club of Lake Charles.

Dan’s political career saw him serving as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1996 to 2005 representing District 36–Calcasieu and Cameron Parishes. In the legislature Dan was actively involved in road projects, economic development, education, commerce, and insurance. He served on the Commerce, Retirement, Natural Resources and House Executive Committees. Dan actively and aggressively advocated for the Southwest Louisiana area during his entire tenure in office. He took great pride in fighting for the right cause. Dan was renowned for maintaining wonderful political relationships regardless of what side of the aisle was represented.

Dan received a special papal award from Pope Benedict XVI on May 17, 2010 when he was investured as a Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great.

Despite Dan’s many accomplishments, he took his greatest pleasure when he was hosting or involved with any of his twenty grandchildren. Dan will be remembered as an outstanding husband, father, grandfather, brother, businessman, civic leader, and legislator who aided the Lake Charles community and its citizens in countless ways. His intuitive sense of fairness and assisting those in need were his trademarks. Dan’s great sense of humor and quick Irish wit will be long remembered and sorely missed by all.

Dan was preceded in death, by his parents William and Marilyn Flavin, father and mother-in-law Roger and Wanda (Miller) Pearson Jones and grandchild Samuel Joseph Flavin.

  9. To the Flavin Family,

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Dan. He was an extraordinary person whose kindness and generosity touched the lives of many. I wanted to share a few thoughts and memories that illustrate just how special he was to all of us.

Dan had a remarkable ability to connect with people. Our conversations about marriage, kids, work, and, most importantly, family were always meaningful and insightful. He exemplified the perfect balance of working hard and sharing the fruits of his labor with everyone he knew, whether they were family, friends, or strangers.

One memory that stands out to me is my most recent birthday. It was the first one without my dad, and Dan found out where a few of us were gathered and generously picked up the tab for my birthday party. That thoughtful gesture perfectly captured his spirit and kindness.

The boys always loved visiting Dan. He had a way of engaging them with fun stories and would often give them “out of jail” coins to share with their principal if they ever needed a way out of a bind. He often gave them a few dollars and encouraged them to take half and give it to someone in need and spend the other on toys or candy. It was these small, thoughtful acts that highlighted Dan’s character and the joy he brought to those around him.

Please know that Dan’s generosity and the lessons he shared will remain with us always. He was a remarkable presence in our lives, and his memory will continue to inspire us.

My heartfelt condolences go out to your family during this difficult time.

    With deepest sympathy,
    Erin Allen

  15. Candle 6Dan was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. In addition to being a great Father, husband and son, he made the Realtor organization proud in everything he did.

Whether he was debating a point at a Board of Directors meeting, or representing his constituents in the LA Legislature, you knew he had everyone’s best interest at heart.

They’re not making them like Dan anymore.

We will keep Dan and his family in our prayers

    Al & Judy Pappalardo

  16. Candle 6I am so sorry for your loss. I grew up with Dan in Joliet. We were classmates at St. Pat’s grade school and at JCHS for freshman year. We were so disappointed that Dan had to move away but Joliet’s loss was St. Charles’ gain. Even at such a young age, Dan was larger than life. His infectious enthusiasm always had you ready to embrace whatever challenges lay ahead of us.

My condolences to Lisa and family and to all of Dan’s siblings.

    Carey Quigley

  17. What a wonderful man to have had in the midst of our shared community for so many years. A true credit to all he touched, all that engaged his interests and attention, personally and professionally. His personal reputation unblemished, his professionalism unquestioned, his motives and ideas legislatively always pure and to the greater good of his constituents. I never knew him personally, but never had to in order understand and see the goodness and excellence of his influence. God, family, community…an example to all who knew him so well, and all of us who could see from the distance. My condolences to his family: “Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!” Psalm 127: 4. Dan and Lisa’s quiver was full, and so are the hearts of all who loved him.

    Tommy Curtis

  18. Candle 2Lisa and family,
I have the deepest respect for the beautiful family you and Dan raised. He left this world too soon, but I’m sure there’s an Irish celebration in heaven.
Generous, kind, devoted to God and family. He leaves a beautiful legacy. I’m so sorry for the pain and loss that you are feeling. ✝️🙏🌹 Mary Ellen ❤️

  19. It is with great sadness to hear of Dan’s passing. We met Dan upon our relocation to Lake Charles in the late 1980’s when I assumed the HR role for Olin Corporation. Dan immediately became a friend to our family and both he and his Dad (who had a very long and successful career with Olin himself) quickly helped integrate our family into the Lake Charles community. This included assisting us in every way possible from schools, church, athletics, work or just socially. Dan, Lisa and his Dad also made sure we immediately had an extended family as well. Then Dan and I had the opportunity to work together over the next 10 years or so and I found his professionalism and character was unmatched and I will forever see him as someone who gave a lifetime of service and friendship to everyone and everything he engaged in. We will forever be grateful for the time we had with Dan and his family and our most sincere condolences to your entire family during these most difficult times.

  20. Candle 1To the Family of Dan Flavin: Cousin Dan🍀 so many warm memories growing up when the Flavin’s, Condon’s, and Hartmann’s would be together. It was such a Wonderful time when we visited many, many years after you moved to Lake Charles. Celebrating your mom’s birthday with lots of her family around. You and Tim showed us a wonderful time and we had so much fun with you all. Luckily, we made it before your mom passed and now you. Precious memories, positive thoughts, and prayers 🙏 for your loved ones. Truthfully, anyone who knew you loved you. RIP Dan, until we meet again, Cuz!🌈🍀☘️💚

  21. Candle 2Dan was a trustworthy Gentleman with endless love for his wife and family, his religion and community. He loved his politics and a strong believer of justice and fairness. Behind it all he was a proud Irishman. We had a special friendship that will be forever.
Ar dheis De go raimh a anam (May he Rest in Peace)

  22. Dan was a well rounded influential powerful and most of all down to earth person who I got to pledge with as a KA brother. Dan was a friend back then, and in 2004, was the last time I saw him regarding a business transaction in Real Estate even though I have lived in San Diego for the past 43 years. I still have family in Lake Charles, and Dan’s name would come up giving me advice on things! It was like messages through the grapevine and I always got kick out of it. Two weeks ago, my 2 cousins, Dixie and Kim texted me a selfie of him and them. It warmed my heart! He always had a way of making you fill good with his big smile and joyful personality… They knew how much Dan meant to me. I’m sadden over his passing, and wish all of his family during this trying times the best. Dan was an icon among men and made this world a better place. “Dan, we are all going to miss you.” I know you are in Heaven and watching us from above! Joe Stevens, KA pledged brother 1976.

  23. Candle 4Beau and Tricia…our prayers and love to all of you during this difficult time. God’s love will keep all of you comforted and filled with the beautiful memories of Mr. Flavin. Our love and prayers are with you always.
