Elizabeth Jones Hungerford

Elizabeth Jones Hungerford, 97, died in a local care facility on Friday, November 11, 2011.

Elizabeth was born in Welsh, La. on April 12, 1914. She graduated from Welsh High as valedictorian and received a B. S. degree in Home Economics from LSU. Elizabeth was then employed by Vermilion Parish School Board as a Home Economics teacher at Gueydan, La. for three years. Elizabeth then resided in Lake Charles from 1937 to the present. Elizabeth was of the Presbyterian faith but had a private audience with and was blessed by Pope Pius XI along with a Catholic friend from Vicksburg, Mississippi. They were touring six countries in Europe in 1935. She was a member of the Lake Charles Garden Club and the American Assn. of University Women for many years. Elizabeth was also a charter member of the Leaf and Petal Garden Club and among its early presidents.

Elizabeth lived a very long life and was a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by one daughter, Liz Morrison, of Lake Charles...Two sons, Bill Hungerford and wife Lynda of Seabrook, TX and Allen Hungerford and wife Evelyn of Lake Charles. She had one grandson, Ken Hungerford, of Tallahassee, FL and two granddaughters....Linda Hungerford of Portland, OR and Laura Hungerford of Minneapolis, MN. She had three step grandchildren..... Neely Doucet of Lake Charles, Julie Phelps of Atlanta, GA and Ross Harold of Seabrook, TX. She also had many great grandchildren.

Elizabeth lived for three years at Grand Cove and two years at Resthaven in Lake Charles. We would like to thank all the staff at both facilities for the loving care they gave our mother for these years. We thank Odyssey Hospice for the support we were all given at this time. Also, a big thank you to Dean and Mimi Benoit, Elizabeth's caregivers for the past few years.

Visitation will be Saturday December 10, 2011 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM with a memorial service being held at 2:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Home.

  1. Dear Liz, Bill Allen,I was a second cousin to your father. My mother was Goldie Hungerford Faulk, from Lake Charles and grandfather, was Saul Hungerford,from Alta Loma, Tx.My sister, Trudy Faulk was here from Lake Charles 12/17/2011 and told me of the death of your mother.I am sorry to hear about her passing. She was a very interesting lady. I am the Hungerford genealogist. She was helpful in giving me some of your family information over the telephone. I never got to meet her personally, but she told me she had many of the old Hungerford family pictures. I live in Santa Fe, Texas. Not very far from Bill.
