Georgia Berniece McCain Greathouse

December 17, 1921 ~ October 5, 2011

Georgia Berniece McCain Greathouse, known to those who loved her as Berniece, Mama, Maw Maw, Bunny, and Aunt Bunny went to be with the Lord on the morning of Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 at the age of 89 surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Greathouse was a dear friend to many whose lives she touched with her welcoming heart, listening ear, and faithful, praying spirit. She loved her family and friends. It will be her faith in God and dedication to others that will be missed by all.

Mrs. Greathouse was born on December 17, 1921 in the home of her parents, George Angus and Mima Hebert McCain in Grand Lake. She made the Grand Lake/Big Lake community her home her entire life, as did much of her mother's family, which were among the first settlers of the Big Lake community. On July 15, 1941 she married George E. Greathouse in Kissimmee, Florida near the army base where George was stationed before being sent, just a few months later, to fight in Europe for 5 years during World War II. Upon George's return at the end of the war, they raised their six children while farming rice and building a home near her birthplace. Mr. Greathouse went on to be with the Lord in 1991, just three months before they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Greathouse was a graduate of Grand Lake High School's class of 1938. She was a faithful, charter member of Grand Lake Faith Temple. She was an active member of the Sweetlake Homemakers Club for over 60 years and a strong supporter of the Cameron Parish Homemakers clubs. She had been a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). An avid gardener, she took great pride in her yard, acres of vegetable gardens that she grew with her husband, and her flowers, especially her approximately 100 azalea shrubs and yard full of trees that she and her husband planted in a once empty horse pasture, losing 53 trees and many azaleas from her yard to hurricane Rita. Throughout her life she dedicated her time and energy to her family, supporting her children in horse and livestock shows, rodeos, basketball, track, Boy Scouts, and all of their interests.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Greathouse; and her brother Curtis McCain.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons Wendell Greathouse and wife Irene of Grand Lake; and Charles Greathouse and wife Brenda of Moss Bluff; daughters Annette Norman and husband Charles; Jill Manuel and husband Greg; Beth Ferguson and husband Rusty; and Suzanne McFatter and husband Randall all of Grand Lake; and 17 grandchildren (Mary Beth Storms and husband Jonathan of Houston, Leigh Ann Levy and husband Michael of Dallas, TX; Julie Ann Greathouse; Ronald Norman and wife Janelle of Austin, TX; Nancy Norman of Vinton, Megan Norman of Roanoke and Jon Norman of Grand Lake; Clint Greathouse and wife Patti of Anchorage, Alaska; Krissy Randolph of Lake Charles; Holly, Bryce, and Colleen Manuel; Stephen, Philip and Andrew Ferguson; and Laura and Adam McFatter all of Grand Lake) and eight great-grandchildren (Alex, Trenton, and Keilan Greathouse of Anchorage, AK; Paige and Kali Camille Randolph and Kaden Ferguson of Lake Charles; Lila Storms of Houston, and Hadley Prejean of Roanoke.

Also left to cherish her memory are her sister, Betty Sheridan, of Lake Charles and brother Vernon McCain and wife Jolene of Hecker and numerous nieces and nephews.

Casket bearers will be her grandsons.

  5. I worked at Emeritus for the last 9 months and caring for Mrs. Berniece was an honor. She was always loving, joking, smiling, and encouraging! She always made my day. Before she left our facility I had the oppurtunity to sit and talk with her in a very different way then just caring for her. She and I talked about God, about her family and the love she has for them. She deff. has a big big place in my heart. I loved her dearly! I will be praying as you all mourn the loss of a precious loved one, I pray you take comfort in the fact that she has a close relationship with the Lord and is now home in heaven.
