Gurfy Guy Joseph Leger

December 25, 1925 — December 22, 2010

Gurfy "Guy" Joseph Leger, 84, was called home on Wednesday, December 22, 2010. Mr. Leger was born on December 25, 1925, in Churchpoint, Louisiana. Guy was the loving husband of Ethel Leger for 62 years. He lived in Lake Charles since 1946.


He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He worked thirty-two years at Cities Service, retiring as a supervisor. He enjoyed breeding and raising rabbits. He was a professional rabbit judge for over forty years. He received many national and state honors. He was inducted into the Louisiana Rabbit Breeders Association Hall of Fame in 1999 and received the American Rabbit Breeders Association Distinguished Service Award. He devoted his life to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was an active member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church.


Those left to honor and cherish his memories are his son, Kenneth (Marcell) Leger; daughters, Sharon (Wayne) Hearn, Vicki Welch, and Veronica Leger; long time family members Jim Welch, Shannon Stutes, Jimmy Trahan, and John Louviere; his sister Georgia (Phil) Menard, sister-in-law Melva LeBleu; eight grandchildren, Kenny and Scott Leger, Christy and B.J. Hearn, Brooke Welch Devillier and Blake Welch, Kayla and Jamie Louviere; and ten great grandchildren: Keighley and Kolby Leger, Terence West, Mason Hearn, Braden Welch, Vadah, Tristen and Brock Bellard, Alexis and Keith Jack; and a host of in-laws, extended family members, relatives, friends, and their faithful companion, Gigi.


Guy was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Fontenot Leger; his father, Martin Leger; his mother, Olivia Richard; his sister, Ameda McKeiver; his brother, Gus Leger; and son, Gurfy "Junior" Leger.


His funeral services will be at 1:00 PM on Monday, December 27, 2010 at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Father Keith Pellerin will officiate. Burial will follow at Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home on Sunday, December 26, 2010 from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM with a scripture service and rosary at 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Monday from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
