Hillard Joseph Broussard

Hilliard Joseph Broussard, a beloved father, devoted grandfather, and respected member of the community, passed away on Sunday July 16, 2023 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was born on October 3, 1930, in Niblett, Louisiana, to Landry and Ida Broussard.

Hilliard was a man of many talents and accomplishments. With a passion for carpentry, he honed his skills and became a Master Carpenter, working for Knapp and East, H.H. Knapp, and took care of Matilda Gray estates for Mr. Knapp. Eventually, he established his own business, Broussard's Carpenter Service, where he crafted beautiful furniture and brought his exceptional craftsmanship to countless projects.

In addition to his professional achievements, Hilliard served his country with pride. He attained the rank of Sargent First Class in the National Guard and earned the Marksman Badge and Sharpshooter Badge in the Army Reserve. His commitment to his country and the values he upheld were truly commendable.

Hilliard's involvement in the community extended beyond his work and military service. He was an active member of the Cowboy Club and the Cajun French Music Association, cherishing the cultural traditions he held dear. As a devout Catholic, his faith was a guiding light in his life.

Outside of his professional and community endeavors, Hilliard had a passion for music. He would spend countless hours playing his accordion, delighting those around him with his lively melodies. He also found great joy in attending his grandson’s Art Shows, watching his granddaughters play softball, and cheering on the McNeese State University football and basketball teams. He had a love for antique cars, which led to him collecting die cast replicas, and of course he had a special display cabinet that he built for them. A true craftsman at heart, he derived immense satisfaction from creating beautiful furniture and often took leisurely walks with his beloved dog.

Hilliard was known for his kind and gentle nature, always displaying unwavering loyalty and honesty. His love for his family was immeasurable, and he cherished the moments spent with them. Often seen donning his signature cowboy hat or a McNeese cap, he possessed a unique sense of >

Hilliard is survived by his loving daughter, Linda Broussard Manuel (Jamie), his devoted son, Brady Joseph Broussard (Darlene), and his caring brother, Hubert Broussard. He also leaves behind cherished grandchildren: Garrett Manuel, Meagan Abshire (Jason), and Lauren Broussard. His great-grandchildren, Meredith Abshire and Jason Abshire, Jr., brother in law Donald Legnion (Rita), brought him immeasurable joy and were a constant source of pride.

Hilliard was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jeanette “Jean” Broussard, as well as his parents. His memory will forever be treasured by those who knew him, and his legacy of hard work, kindness, and loyalty will continue to inspire generations to come.

A funeral service to celebrate Hilliard's life will be held at Our Lady of Good Council Thursday July 20, 2023 at 9:00 AM. Friends, family, and acquaintances are welcome to pay their respects and bid farewell to this remarkable individual from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesday July 19, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles with a rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or any Animal Rescue Center.
