James Randy Herpin

February 25, 1952 ~ June 29, 2024

James Randy Herpin, known to all as Randy, brought an abundance of laughter and wisdom to the world during his vibrant 72 years. Born on February 25, 1952, in the small town of Kaplan, LA, Randy embraced life with a sense of humor that could light up the darkest room. He peacefully passed away at home on June 29, 2024, in Lake Charles, LA, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter.

His brothers, Ricky (Liz) and Reggie (Kelly), were Randy’s partners in crime throughout childhood and his cousins, Keith, Kevin, Kim, Gail, and Dale, were not too far away during his younger years of shenanigans. Randy was a graduate of Lake Charles High School and McNeese State University, where he not only expanded his mind but also his collection of hilarious stories. Randy served his country with honor as a member of the US Air Force, where he was as skilled with a punchline as he was with his duties.

Upon returning to civilian life, Randy joined the Lake Charles Police Department, where he proudly protected and served with a smile that never faded. He worked at Conoco for 3 decades, where he was as much a comedian as he was a dedicated employee. His colleagues often joked that Randy could defuse any tension with his humor, and he was always the go-to guy for a good laugh both on and off the clock.

Randy’s interests were as eclectic as his sense of humor. After retirement, he was an accomplished square dance caller, and his calls were often punctuated with quips that kept dancers on their toes both literally and figuratively. He loved cooking and building things in his shop. His passion for learning was only matched by his love for riding motorcycles and trading guns, hobbies that he often joked made him a “renaissance man in leather and steel.”

Randy’s life story would not be complete without the mention of his high school sweetheart turned wife, Debra, who he lovingly referred to as his “better half.” Over 55 years together, 49 of which as husband and wife, they ventured through life’s ups and downs with the kind of love that inspires country songs. His children, Hoyt, Heath, and Heather, inherited their dad’s quick wit and charm, along with a generous spirit and a shared love for animals. Randy often referred to the menagerie as his grand dogs – Elisa (Elliebear), Sadie Belle, Bailey, Tank, Nolia, Wyatt, Ruby, and Praline. The family gatherings often resembled a canine convention, with Randy as the charismatic chairman.

Preceding him in the great departure were his parents, Aldes and Mary Herpin, and his beloved fur children Biffin, Gidget, and Matilda Grey, along with the grand dogs that crossed the rainbow bridge – Fey, Mina, Gemma, Heidi, Phoenix, and Chewbucca (Bucky). One could imagine the raucous reunion at the pearly gates, their barks and tail wags echoing a warm welcome.

Randy’s life was a masterclass in finding joy in every moment, remembered not merely for his achievements but for the thousands of tiny moments that brought joy and color to the lives of those he touched. Though he has left the stage, the echoes of his laughter will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew him. James Randy Herpin, a man who lived and laughed fully, will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
