John R. “Sonny” Hodges, 89 years old, passed away on April 6, 2023 in a Lafayette, LA hospital. He was born on September 12, 1933 to John and Estelle Giovanni Hodges in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
John was a graduate of LaGrange High School and McNeese State University. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command. He was stationed in England, Germany, and Japan. He was an Outstanding Louisiana State Boxer, winning 13 of 16 fights by knockout. John was a Barber for 65 years.
He married his beloved Dolores Jeanne Stutes in 1965. They were introduced by their parents. He was a charter member of the Krewe de la Famille, hosting and attending his last Mardi Gras ball in 2023. He was a member of the Buccaneers for over 50 years, and once proudly served as Jean LaFitte. He was the owner of Mam’selle and co-founder of The Stag Barber Shop (1967).
Those left to cherish his memory are, his sons, Barry Alan Hodges (Nicole) and John Albert Hodges (Brittany); his grandchildren, Devin Scott Hodges (Amanda), Katelyn Merae’ Hodges, Preston Hodges and Scotland Hodges; his great grandchildren, Myles Hodges, Kurrae’ Wall, Jayden Williams, Madyson Hodges and Mason Hodges.
His funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 in the Trinity Baptist Church North Venue, located at 1800 Country Club Rd in Lake Charles. Rev. Steve James will officiate. Burial will follow in Prien Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. Visitation will be held at the church on Monday evening from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM, and will resume at 10:00 AM on Tuesday until the start of the service.
