Opal Frances Spindler

February 13, 1925 ~ May 21, 2011

Opal was born and lived most of her life in New Orleans. She led a full and active life, but as a loving homemaker, family and God always came first. Everyone that knew her loved her and her sweet, compassionate and loving manner.

She played accordion on the radio as a teenager, and enjoyed playing the organ, textile design, and gardening. She was a church librarian for many years and wrote several children's books for her family. She assisted numerous family, friends and church members with their needs. She volunteered with the Red Cross Disaster services, in the hospital ministry of her church, and the New Orleans Museum of Art, where she used her expertise in restoration of hand fans.

On December 12, 1946, she married William (Bill) Spindler, and they had two sons, Bill Spindler of Kingwood, married to Louise, and Tom Spindler of Lake Charles, married to Janice Talley, as well as 3 grandsons, 3 granddaughters, and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her mother, May Thaller Thomas, her father, Fred Thomas, her sister, Dorothea Thomas Lee, her brother, Fred Thomas II, and her husband, William Spindler.

The family would like to express their gratitude to her many friends, including those at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lake Charles, and Church of the Holy Comforter in New Orleans, LA, Reverend Peter Cook, and to the staff of Kingsley Place Assisted Living, and Brighton Bridge Hospice for their help and prayers.

Memorial services will be Saturday, June 4, 2011 at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 123 W. Sale Rd in Lake Charles, at 1:00 PM. Visitation will begin at noon and a Celebration of Life will follow the service in the adjacent Parish Hall. Call 337-477-=1881 for directions.

  11. Tom, Janice, Eric, Brian Marc:Thank you so much for letting me know about the passing of your mom grandmother my aunt. Please let me know when the memorial service will be. I would really like to attend. As strange as it may seem, Aunt Opal was on my mindmore than usual all day Friday Saturday. I thought of her often….but Friday Saturday ..more than usual. I kept thinking about our lunch at the Mexican restaurant several years ago when Kristin I went to Lake Charles to visit ya'll. She was so proud of her baby book!! I am so glad her passing was peaceful. Alzheimer's is a disease with a long good bye. I greatly treasure the several pieces of jewelry she gave me for birthday Christmas gifts when I was a child. Also several years after I married she came over to visit us at our new home and we walked in the woods behind our house. I remember childhood family camping trips, crabbing trips and the week end visits to her and Uncle Bill's camp in Lacombe (?)without a bathroom – we had to use the chamber pot behind the curtain!!! Every time I am on the Tchefuncte River and pass Fairview State Park I glance over at the two camp sites we stayed on one of our camping trips there. It doesn't really seem that long ago.Love, Dinah
