Alice Marie Powers Dieter passed away peacefully after 91 years of a wonderful life on Saturday, December 31, 2016.
Alice Marie was born February 22, 1925 in Port Washington, New York. She had courage and tenacity even beating the odds by miraculously surviving polio at the age of 9. Being one of The Greatest Generation, she worked as a secretary for the Navy during WWII. After catching the eye of one of those sailors, she married Bob Dieter in 1950 and had four children. In her late 30s she, with her New York moxie, followed her husband who was transferred by PPG Industries to Lake Charles, Louisiana, Alice Marie flourished in Lake Charles. She joined several organizations serving as president of many of them including the Catholic Daughters of America and the Altar Society in Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in the 60s and 70s. She even brought a Mahjongg game to Lake Charles that continues still. She worked as a secretary at several places including Reinaur Real Estate, Crossroads Bookstore, and at the rectory of Our Lady Queen of Heaven. In the late 90s she moved to Metairie to be closer to family.
She loved telling stories, playing Bridge, collecting coffee cups and figurines, painting nature scenes, watching JAG & Regis, bragging about the beauty of her children and grandchildren, and all things New York. She always left her progeny with saucy advice: New York is the greatest city on earth, shopping is therapeutic, if you've got it flaunt it, look a person in the eye, speak your mind, never get old, and saying "I love you" is overrated, you need to show people.
She lit up the room with her passion for life and affected all she met. In her later years, she was very appreciative of her family, caregivers and sitters who selflessly cared for her.
The family is indebted to those from Notre Dame Hospice for their loving service and to her main sitters, Joan Rising and Gloria Sykes, who cared for her with patience and understanding.
Her devoted husband of 36 years Robert Frederick Dieter pre-deceased her. She is survived by her children Mark R. Dieter (Vikki), Elizabeth Dieter Slattery (Phil), Robert F. Dieter (Julie), and Richard F. Dieter (Debbie). She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
