Anita Marie Thompson Duke, 79, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on January 2, 1946, to Pearl Chesson and Ernest Lee Thompson, Anita was a lifelong advocate for others and dedicated her life to service and compassion. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Psychology from McNeese State University and went on to obtain her Master's in Social Work from Tulane University. Anita worked as a devoted social worker for more than 20 years, touching countless lives with her warmth, wisdom, and strength.
Anita had a love for reading, a deep affection for children, and a special bond with her beloved cats. Her gentle spirit and generous heart will be remembered by all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Debra Duke and Jason Duke, and her cherished feline companion, Rosa. Anita was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Gloria Bridges and Connie Roche.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2025, at Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. and continue until the time of service. Inurnment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Cremation has been entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association in Anita's memory.
