Aquilla Mary Young

Aquilla Mary Young, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2026, in Sulphur, Louisiana, at the age of 77. Born on September 16, 1948, in Lecompte, Louisiana, Aquilla was a bright spark who brought joy and warmth to everyone she met.

Growing up, Aquilla attended LaGrange High School and dedicated many years to being a homemaker, a role she cherished until her children were old enough to start school. She later contributed her talents as a personnel clerk at Sears from 1982 to 1990 and played an important role in the 2000 and 2010 censuses, always staying engaged and involved with her community.

Aquilla's life was enriched by the love of her children-Jodi Pettifield (Johnny) of Sulphur, Stacy Moore (Al) of Sulphur, and Denise Moore (Charlie) of Sulphur-who remember her for her unfailing support and guiding spirit. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her immense happiness. From Alan Poissot Jr. (Kandis) and Chris Poissot (Cheyan), Charles Young (Kelly), Courtney Thibodeaux (Josh), Jessica Yanzo, Mary Guillory (Blaine), Meagan McCreery (Robert), Ashley Stgermain (David), Morgan McCreery to the little ones named Channing, Landyn, Abigail, Kallie, Harvey Belle, Hayden Ann, Terry, Charlie Lea, Jude, Allen, Elizabeth, Elliott, each of them held a special place in her heart. With love in her eyes, she anticipated the arrival of two more great-grandchildren, Breelyn and Baby Meek.

Aquilla was not just a mother and grandmother; she was a playful spirit who enjoyed spending her time on her iPad, sharing laughter and stories with her children and grandkids. Life took a turn for Aquilla when she welcomed Sassy Girl, her faithful furry companion, who became her constant sidekick and source of comfort after the passing of her beloved husband, John P. Young. The two were inseparable, creating countless memories together.

Aquilla was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Young, her parents, Herman Butter and Imogene Mouhot, and her dear siblings: sister Vicky Dartez and brothers Lionel Butter Jr. and Robert Butter. She is survived by her brother, Larry Butter Sr. (Naomie), who will surely carry their cherished memories forward.

Cremation has been entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home of Sulphur, and a memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate Aquilla's life and the joy she brought to those around her. In the spirit of her warmth and humor, family and friends will gather to share stories, laughter, and love in her honor.
