Barbara Ann Cureton, 79, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at a local hospital surrounded by her loving family. Barbara was born on February 16, 1937, to Walter and Matilda Rutherford, Sr. in Oak Grove, Louisiana. Barbara was raised by her grandparents, Edward and Marie Rutherford.
Barbara was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church and loved to cook for shut-ins and people who were under the weather. She also worked on the Benevolence Committee. After moving to Houston, TX, she loved to attend the symphony at Jones Hall. When she moved back to the Lake Charles area she attended Sale Street Baptist Church and then Emmanuel Baptist Church where she grew under the ministry of Francis LaRocque before rejoining Trinity Baptist Church. Barbara started a cultured marble business with her loving husband Larry Cureton. Because of the long hours required at the business, she and Larry enjoyed “long weekend” vacations.
One of the major loves of her life was working in her yard and her greenhouse. When it was raining, you could find her working in her greenhouse enjoying the sound of the rain drops on the plastic cover. Barbara was one of those people you hear about with a “green thumb”. Barbara was a multi-talented lady. Not only did she draft the plans for her and Larry’s home, she also helped several people re-design their kitchens.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and two brothers: Bryant Rutherford, Sr., and Rodney Rutherford. Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 38 years, Larry Cureton; her stepmom, “Tot” Rutherford; her daughter Stephanie White (Mark), and their children Marciann and Jacob. She is also survived by her sister Billie Jean Farr (Doug) and four brothers; Walter, Randy, Allen and Robert Lynn Rutherford.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 5:00PM until 9:00PM in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will continue on Monday morning from 9-11AM. Service will be at 11:00AM at the Johnson Funeral Home chapel. Burial will follow at Rutherford Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
