Bufford Henry LeJeune, 86, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 3, 2026. He was born on June 19, 1939, in Mowata, Louisiana, to Elie and Ursula Cormier LeJeune, and was raised on a rice farm where he learned the value of hard work, self-reliance, and faith.
A skilled carpenter by trade, Bufford was known for working with his hands and doing things the right way. He also spent time driving 18-wheelers and was never far from his trademark yellow No. 2 pencil, always tucked behind his ear and sharpened only with a knife. Using cypress wood, he became well known for crafting wood duck nesting boxes and fish traps, projects that reflected both his craftsmanship and his love of the outdoors. He especially enjoyed deer and squirrel hunting and spending time in nature. He also enjoyed French music and dancing.
Family meant everything to Bufford. He treasured the memories made on long station wagon trips across the country, stopping at state parks and visiting relatives along the way, simple journeys that became lasting family stories. His steady presence, quiet humor, and practical wisdom will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Evelina Quebodeaux LeJeune; his children, Deborah LeJeune, Donald J. LeJeune and wife Cindy, and Sarah Derks and husband David; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Ronald LeJeune; and his siblings, Theo LeJeune, Lilly LeJeune, and Arcy LeJeune.
His funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, in the Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles Chapel, with Rev. Dr. Stewart Greathouse officiating. Visitation will be held on Tuesday at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Mr. LeJeune will be laid to rest at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, January 7, 2026 in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Harbor Hospice of Lake Charles for their compassionate care of not only our father, but our entire family.
