Carmen Gary, 101 of Sulphur passed away peacefully on December 30th, 2022, the Feast of the Holy Family. She was born June 21st, 1921, in Cayey, Puerto Rico and was raised in New York. Carmen joined the Army and served as a nurse during WWII. She met her husband James Gary and settled in Sulphur.
She loved her Catholic faith and was a member of the Legion of Mary, Catholic Daughters, Serra Club and Holy Family Community. She served her church as a faithful member, visiting the homebound and attending daily mass. Carmen was a fabulous cook, she loved to travel, and visit the casino. Her mantra was “pray, pray and pray some more.”
Carmen was preceded in death by the love of her life, James Gary in 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Santiago and Cleofe Martinez Caraballo; sisters, Justina Ortiz, Modesta Martinez, Catherine Savarino, and brother Benjamin Medina.
Carmen is survived by her loving daughter, Rita Kay Gary; her siblings Maria Banchs of North Carolina and Eligio Madina of Texas. Carmen has two surviving sisters-in-laws, Linda Gary and Jo Dee Gary. Her life was filled with many caring nieces and nephews Manuel, Eliza, Yolanda, Raddie, Jamie, Camille, Willie, Cathy, Jill, Lori, and Spencer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023, at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, a Rosary will be said before the mass at 9:30 AM, Father Edward J. Richard, M.S., will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday, January 2nd, 2023, with a Cursillo Rosary at 6:00 PM at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church.
