Cary Wayne Vercher

The servant heart of a teacher. The keen eye of an artist. The mind of a passionate learner, and conviction of a devoted husband and father. Cary was all of these, and so much more, to so many.

Cary Vercher, 78, of Moss Bluff, Louisiana, was born on March 24, 1948, in Alexandria, Louisiana, and entered his heavenly home on September 27, 2026.

Cary grew up in Lake Charles. Graduating from Lake Charles High School prepared him to transition through McNeese State University with the ultimate academic goal of achieving his Juris Doctor from LSU Law in 1973. He moved to Morgan City, Louisiana, for a career beginning opportunity at Aycock, Horne, Caldwell, Coleman, & Duncan, followed by 30 years as an independent practitioner, ultimately moving back to his hometown of Lake Charles, retiring after 52 years from the legal profession as a partner of Johnson & Vercher, LLC. Throughout his legal career Cary organized, established and served on the board of St. Mary Outreach, Inc., a United Way agency serving St. Mary Parish, as well as served the LSBA as a member of a Hearing Committee for the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board.

The law was only one of many passions of this genuine Renaissance man. He was a baseball and golf coach to his sons. He was a comprehensive artist, practiced painter and writer, exceptional photographer, and technology tutor. Cary was a self-taught golfer, thanks to Hit it Hard, one of Arnold Palmers’ first instructional books. What superseded any interest or hobby was his affection for his wife Rita, loving her fiercely for 54 years.

Cary delighted in sharing his knowledge with others, whether in a legal problem, how to troubleshoot a computer glitch, or fix a golf swing. His grandson Braden shared his love for photography and was the recipient of many hours of affectionate guidance in that area.

Those left to honor Cary’s life include his wife, Rita; Sons, Cary Wayne, Jr. and Ryan Phelps; grandson, Braden Alexander, all of Moss Bluff; Sister, Kristine Stewart and husband Joe of Tampa, FL; sister-in-law, Camella, of Winter Garden, FL, as well as eleven nieces and nephews.

Cary is preceded in death by his parents, Ambrose Ardis Vercher and Lula Mae Lemoine Vercher,and his brother, Dennis Ambrose Vercher.

Visitation will be held at Johnson Funeral Home in Moss Bluff on Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 12:00 – 2:00 PM, with a memorial service at 2:00 PM.
