Charles Edward “Charlie” Nourrcier, a lifelong resident of Lake Charles, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2025, at the age of 91.
Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Sandra Kay Owens Nourrcier; his three children: Charles “Chuck” Nourrcier, Brett Nourrcier, and Dena Anderson; and his eight cherished grandchildren: Charlie Nourrcier, Kelsey Nourrcier, Sam Nourrcier, Kate Nourrcier, Julia Anderson, Jeremy Anderson, Christen Nourrcier, and Lucas Anderson.
A proud graduate of Lake Charles High School, Charlie earned local acclaim for his athletic talents, excelling in three sports and receiving numerous honors, including All-District recognition in track and the Outstanding Back Award in football. His prowess on the field led him to Hinds Junior College in Raymond, Mississippi—a place he fondly referred to as “God’s country.”
Recruited to play football at Hinds, Charlie led the team as quarterback to an undefeated season in 1954, capturing the Mississippi State Junior College Championship and the National Junior College Football Title. The championship was sealed in a 13-7 victory over El Camino Junior College before a crowd of over 61,000 fans at the Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Charlie's performance garnered national attention, with coverage from sportswriters across the country.
In an era when athletes played both offense and defense, Charlie was not only a stellar quarterback but also a standout defensive back. He earned All-State Honorable Mention honors at Hinds and continued his defensive excellence for two years at McNeese State University.
In recognition of his leadership and achievements, Charlie was inducted into the Hinds Community College Sports Hall of Fame in 2000, along with his undefeated 1954 teammates.
Charlie served his country with honor during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was prepared to be part of the landing force had the conflict escalated.
One of Charlie’s most meaningful contributions was his dedication to mentoring young athletes. From 1968 to 1989, he volunteered with the South Lake Charles Little League—first as a coach to his sons and later as President—positively impacting generations of local youth.
Following a 30-year career at Hercules Plastics Chemical Company, Charlie embraced retirement with enthusiasm. In his own words: “Since retirement, I do a lot of fishing. The squirrels and I share a garden, and I love spending time visiting and babysitting the grandchildren.”
Charlie Nourrcier leaves behind a legacy of athletic excellence, community service, and devotion to family. He will be remembered with love, admiration, and deep respect by all who knew him.
