Clifford E. Bumpus

May 4, 1931 — December 25, 2025

Lake Charles, Louisiana

Clifford Erwin “Bump” Bumpus, 94, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 25, 2025, at his residence in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Clifford was born on May 4, 1931, in Hammond, Indiana, to Clarence and Helen Huntley Bumpus. He spent much of his youth in New Albany, Mississippi, years he often recalled with fondness and gratitude. He later made Lake Charles his home, graduating from Lake Charles High School in 1949 as valedictorian of his class, a reflection of his discipline, intelligence, and determination from an early age.

In 1950, Clifford married his high school sweetheart, Gloria Gaudet, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in love, loyalty, and shared values. He was deeply devoted to his family and took great joy in time spent together, especially during the many summer vacations they shared. Those trips, often to America’s national parks, were among his most treasured memories.

Clifford lived life with energy and focus. A gifted athlete, he was a standout track star in high school and later found enjoyment and camaraderie in golf and bowling. Never one to shy away from a challenge, he eventually stepped away from corporate America and built an exceptionally successful career as a day trader, guided by discipline, confidence, and hard-earned wisdom.

Those who knew Bump will remember a man who valued family, pursued excellence, and lived with quiet determination. His life was marked by hard work, thoughtful choices, and a deep appreciation for the moments that mattered most.

May Clifford “Bump” Bumpus be remembered with gratitude and love and may his family find comfort in the many memories they hold close, trusting that he now rests in peace.

Those left to cherish his memory are, his children, Gail Byrley (Martin), Daniel Bumpus (Olivia), and Karen Thomas; and… his grandchildren Scott Bumpus, Joseph Bumpus, Christy Bumpus Bertin, Danielle Maness Saldana, Ross Byrley, Courtney Bumpus Key, Tiffany Bumpus Weaver, and Sara Byrley Chaisson. Also 16 great grandchildren and one on the way in 2026.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Gloria Bumpus; his parents; his son, Ronnie Bumpus; his sister, Sally Bonvillian; and his in-laws, Wilber and Lottie Gaudet.

His funeral will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 2, 2026, in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel, 4321 Lake Street, with Msgr. Jace Eskind presiding. Burial will follow in Prien Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 9:00 AM until the start of the service.

The family would like to give special thanks to his excellent care givers, Teresa Leger and staff.

Memorial donations may be made to Anna Bumpus Benefit; payable to Gail Byrley 4846 Portrush Drive, Lake Charles, LA 70605.
