Dale Evans Howell, 81, of Lake Charles, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025. Born in Mobile, Alabama, on July 19, 1943, Dale was the son of the late Bernard and Rosie Leytham Howell.
A proud and decorated veteran, Dale served his country with distinction as a Green Beret in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. His bravery and commitment to his fellow soldiers left a lasting legacy of service and sacrifice.
Following his military career, Dale worked as a skilled carpenter and later dedicated over 20 years to Mobil Oil Company as a crane operator. Whether building with his hands or operating heavy machinery, he took pride in every job he did.
A man of many talents and passions, Dale had a lifelong love for the outdoors-boating, skiing, and wood carving brought him joy. He was also an accomplished artist who could draw and paint with remarkable detail. His creativity extended to classic cars, which he loved to restore and race. Dale's beloved race cars, "Yosemite Sam" and "The Roadrunner," were fixtures at the track, especially when racing alongside the Vanwinkles.
Dale was a longtime member of the Lake Charles YMBC and the Shriners, organizations he deeply valued for their camaraderie and community service.
Dale was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His love for his family was unwavering, and he leaves behind a legacy of strength, humor, and heart.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Tamatha Howell of Craig, CO; his grandchildren, Christopher Howell (Gabby) of Westlake, LA, Brandon Francois (Andrea) of Craig, CO, Aylora Francois (EJ) of Lake Charles, and Destiny Felice (Manuel) of Lake Charles; his sister, Betty Saine of Austell, GA; his brother, James Howell of Lake Charles; 14 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his ex-wife, Pat King; and his sister, Bernadine Grindol.
A memorial service to honor Dale's life will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles, 4321 Lake Street, with Pastor Lloyd Carroll officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until the start of the service. Interment with military honors will follow at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 19, 2025, at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, 1610 Evangeline Rd., Jennings, LA.
