David grew up in Jennings and Iowa. He was a member of the Iowa High School Yellow Jacket Team, playing as a Running Back during his time there. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and worked cattle all his life. He also enjoyed cooking, camping and recently took up traveling. After his retirement he remained active with ongoing projects and in 2018 returned to law enforcement as a part-time officer for the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office.

The many organizations David worked with began early in life as trail rides, growing into benefit dances and poker runs, benefiting local organizations such as Brennan's Blessings, SWLA Ranch Sorting, Colors for A Cause, benefiting those fighting cancer and the Local Heart Association. Through these events he honed his cooking skills and was a talented organizer of many meals during these fund raisers. His signature dishes included Jambalaya and Meatball Fricassee, serving at times over 550 dinners. He was also a past member of the Blue Knights.
