Dr. Lynn E Mitchell, Jr.

Dr. Lynn E. Mitchell Jr., 78, of Sulphur, LA died on July 20, 2019 in a local hospital.

Dr. Mitchell was born on August 15, 1940 in La Feria, TX to Lynn Mitchell Sr. and Hazel Mitchell. Dr. Mitchell held the following degrees:

• A. in Bible with minors in Greek and English, Abilene Christian University, 1961.
• A. in Doctrine with minor in Hebrew, A.C.U., 1969. Thesis: The Apologetic Method of C.S. Lewis. 
• D. in Religious Studies, Rice University, 1979.

He was also part of the Academic Society Membership, American Academy of Religion, Society of Biblical Literature, American Society of Christian Ethics, and Restoration Theological Research Fellowship. Dr. Mitchell was a Resident Scholar in Religion in A.D. Bruce Religion Center and Director of the Religious Studies Program for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, University of Houston, 1985 – 2014.

His selected publications included,

• Walking in the Light: How Christians Face Ethical Issues
• Two Ages and Two Communities: The Implications of an Eschatological Duality for Development of a Social Ethic. Dissertation at Rice University Microfilms International.
• The Two Books of God: Science and the Bible.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Kellogg Mitchell; two children, Anne Mitchell Liscum of Sulphur, LA and Jon Colin Mitchell of Katy, TX.

Cremation has been entrusted to Johnson and Robison Funeral Home.
