Dwayne James Chaumont, 65, of Oberlin, Louisiana, passed away peacefully at his home on April 8, 2026, in Moss Bluff, Louisiana.
Dwayne was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend to many. He served as an altar boy at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Soileau, Louisiana where his family attended church. He loved the outdoors and was an avid sportsman. In his younger years, he and his friends were unstoppable. They often had the plan and Dwayne led the charge. From swimming holes to bike adventures, they wore scraped knees as a badge of honor.
A 1978 graduate of Oberlin High School, Dwayne was a standout athlete. He excelled in football, baseball, track and field, and even held both titles as Oberlin City Tennis Champion (the only two years they had a tournament). He was signed by the St. Louis Cardinals out of high school but chose to pursue college instead, playing baseball for the McNeese State Cowboys.
Dwayne worked in the oil field for over 40 years and was a longtime board member of the American Petroleum Institute (API). As a man, he wore many hats: unsolicited bouncer, unofficial private investigator, pool shark and "champion bear wrestler".
Dwayne had a laugh that came out before the joke was finished, loud and unstoppable. He was quick-witted and always ready with a joke. He never met a stranger and had a way of truly connecting with people wherever he went.
He was a devoted father who loved his children and family deeply. A generous man, both with his time and money, he often gave to those in need. Whether a store front fundraiser (especially involving sweets) or someone's roadside flat tire, he was there. He also enjoyed cooking and took part in many benefit cookouts, always willing to lend a hand.
Dwayne gave back to his community in many ways. He coached Oberlin youth baseball and Moss Bluff youth softball and soccer. He spent many years coaching tournament fastpitch softball and occasionally umpired, as well.
Dwayne will be remembered as a man who worked hard, loved fiercely, and enjoyed life.
Dwayne is survived by his wife, Shelley Kay Waits Chaumont; his children, Dustin Chaumont and wife Britney Buck Chaumont, Carleigh Chaumont LeBlanc and husband Trevor LeBlanc, Casidy Chaumont Booth and husband Tyler Booth; and his grandchildren, Landry Claire Chaumont and Finley Ann Chaumont.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Lucian Chaumont and Neecy Ann Roy Chaumont of Oberlin.
A funeral service for Dwayne will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, April 13, 2026, at Johnson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff officiated by Reverend Leon Fontenot. Burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery in Ragley. Visitation will be held on Monday beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are: Kirt Hebert, Bud Strother, Glenn Granger, Randy Chaumont, Gene Ward, and Isaac LaCombe.
