Edward James Bertrand

Edward James Bertrand, 69, of Lake Charles passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital after a lengthy battle with cancer. Ed was born in Basile, LA to Joyce and Weston Bertrand. He graduated from Basile High School and went on to graduate from McNeese State University where he earned a degree in Education. After graduating from MSU, he served two years in the United States Army stationed in Lawton, OK and Wurtzburg, Germany. After being discharged from the Army, he and his wife made their home in Lake Charles. He returned to McNeese State University to earn his degree in Administration and Supervision. He taught for seven years at Moss Bluff Middle School. He then moved to a position in the local industrial field at Olin Chemicals/Lyondell. He retired in 2004 as a Construction Supervisor in the Engineering and Construction Department. Ed loved woodworking at his shop at home and spending time at their camp at Toledo Bend, LA fishing for bass, bream, and crappie. Preceding him in death were his parents, Joyce and Weston Bertrand. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Peggy Fontenot Bertrand; son, Chad Edward (Laurel) Bertrand; three grandsons, Robert, Addison, and Holden Bertrand; honorary family member, Allison Bartek; two brothers, Delton (Betty) Bertrand and Dale (Jaun) Bertrand; one sister, Donna (Johnny) Shidla all of Lake Charles as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A military service will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, November 6, 2015 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will begin on Thursday from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM with a scripture service and rosary being held at 6:00 PM led by Fr. Nathan Long. Visitation will continue on Friday from 10:00 AM until the start of the military honors. Cremation was entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home. The family wishes to thank Dr. Michael Broussard and his staff, the Infusion Department, ER, and ICU staff at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital for their kind and compassionate care.
