Effie Mae Dyer Brewton

November 16, 1928 — March 13, 2021

Effie Mae Brewton, loving matriarch of her extensive family, departed this world to be with Christ on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at the age of ninety-two.

Effie Mae was born on November 16, 1928 to Webster Robert Dyer, Sr. (Webb) of Oakdale and Grace Thelma Smith Dyer of Pitkin. In 1945, she moved along with her family to Lake Charles, becoming a graduate of St. Charles Academy the following year. She remained in Lake Charles for the majority of her life, where she raised five children, worked as a Medical Secretary for Anesthesia Associates, and eventually established “MaMae’s Daycare,” which she operated for nineteen years. At the age of eighty-two, Effie Mae was invited to share in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Tonya and John Veazey. For the following nine-and-a-half years, she resided with them in Prairieville, where she daily received the utmost love and faithful care for the remainder of her life.

To her family and the many children, she cared for over the years, Effie Mae was affectionately known as “MaMae.” Her large family, whom she often playfully referred to as “a good-looking bunch,” was her pride and joy, and visits with her great-grandchildren were by far one of her favorite activities. Effie Mae had a fighting spirit, a strong sense of determination, a razor-sharp wit, and a steadfast devotion to those she loved. Above all, she had a firm belief in Christ and was a faithful servant of God. A longtime member of Glad Tidings church, she could often be found praying, reading her bible, or listening to biblical teachings and worship on KAJN. Throughout her life, her greatest hope was that all her loved ones would come to know and follow Christ along with her.

Effie Mae was preceded in death by her father and mother, her brother Webster Dyer Jr., and her sister-in-law Marie Dyer. She is survived by her brother Odell Dyer and his wife Margret, her son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Judy Brewton, and her four daughters and sons-in-law: Tyrelle and Tommy Cating, Tonya and John Veazey, Lataine and Mark Fleming, and Diahn and Ron Hixson. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren (with the seventeenth on the way), nine nieces and nephews, and the more than eighty children she cared for over the years, who may not have been related by blood, but all had the privilege of calling her “MaMae.”

A private visitation for the family will be held at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, March 17 at Lake City Baptist Church (3940 Holly Hill Road, Lake Charles, LA). Visitation will open to guests from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm that evening and will continue from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm the following day. A funeral service led by Effie Mae’s grandson, Micah Cating, will take place at Lake City Baptist Church at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 18, 2021 under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
