Elray Toby Ellender Sr., 74, passed away at a local hospital on February 13, 2017.
Elray retired from PPG as a tankerman in 2004 after 35 years and spent 10 years with the Calcasieu Police Jury Mosquito Control. In 1960 he joined the US Army and served in Korea, Germany, and Vietnam. During his tour in Vietnam he was a S/SGT and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, 2 Bronze Star Medals (1st Oak Cluster), 2 Purple Hearts w/V Device, Air Medal, and a combat badge.
Mr. Ellender leaves behind his son, Elray Toby Ellender Jr. and wife Daphne of Grand Lake; daughter, Lydia Ellender and domestic partner Chad Landreneau of Sulphur; two sisters, Elaine Bertrand, and Delores Pouche’; brother, Michael Ellender Sr.; four grandchildren, Marlayna Ellender, Britanie Lanthier, Kenzie and Kyle Ellender; and great-granddaughter, Izzabella Marie Johnson.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Eva Ellender; his loving wife of 45 years, Deanna Marie Ellender; son, Gary Lynn Ellender, brothers, Jimmy and Joe Ellender; and sister, Dorothy Ellender.
A funeral service will be held at Johnson Funeral Home on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 11AM. Burial will follow at Consolata Cemetery. Deacon Harold Nixon will officiate. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 15 from 4PM-9PM. Visitation will continue Thursday morning at 9AM until the start of the service.
