Frances Lanier Powell, 95, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, September 11, 2015. Mrs. Powell was born in Smithfield, NC. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.G. Powell and survived by 3 children: Bill (Laura) Powell, Judy (Barry) Newton, and Kay (Mike) Lynn: 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Frances graduated from Meredith College and received her master's degree at East Carolina University. Mrs. Powell was the first woman professor at Wake Forest University teaching mechanical drafting. She was a flight test engineer at Lockheed-Martin, later taught high school math for 25 years, and was the bookkeeper of her husband's business. Frances was a Sunday school teacher for many years, was an avid learner, and enjoyed traveling and reading. Her love, devotion, and obedience to Jesus Christ will be what her family and friends remember most about her. Visitation will be September 26th and begin at 11am with funeral service following at 12pm at Edward's Funeral Home, 702 N. Queen St., Kinston, NC. The Reverend Chris Monson will officiate.
