George W. Hurlbut

George Whitney Hurlbut, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday September 25, 2026 at his daughter's home.

George was a native and lifelong resident of Lake Charles. Following graduation from Lake Charles High School, George attained a degree from McNeese State College in education. His career as an educator specialized in English. Throughout his career, he became a student as well as the teacher, earning his Master's Degree as well as his plus thirty. He began his dedicated career in Moss Bluff, where he caught the eye of another educator, Nancy Ellen Kanoy, whom he wed. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to and began teaching in Lake Charles. George retired from Barbe High School, where he helped educate many young minds.

Following his career in education, George became Funeral Director. He worked both for Hixson Funeral Home and Johnson Funeral Home, from which he also retired from. George was also an organist for several churches in the area, having played the pipe organ with a true passion and dedication to Christian service.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond Roscoe and Reola Inez Wheeler Hurlbut; brother, Harlan Hurlbut; and wife, Nancy Kanoy Hurlbut. He leaves to his memory, his two daughters, Heather Hurlbut House and husband Eddie and Amber Celeste Duhon; grandchildren, Edwin Hugh (Bubba) House V; Conner Wilson (Bruiser) House; Ava Celeste Duhon, Allie Nicole Duhon and Alex Thomas Duhon.

As to George's wishes, no formal services will be observed. Private interment will take place at Consolata Cemetery.
