Gertrude Riling Cleaton, 103, passed away on Friday, June 23, 2017 at her residence. She was born at St. Patrick Hospital on July 31, 1913 to Mayor George L. Riling and Matilda Miller Riling. She graduated from Saint Charles Academy and Vincent’s Business School and began her career working for Judge Clement Moss, then joined the Calcasieu Parish Clerk of Court’s Office where she retired as a Deputy Clerk of Court.
She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church. She was an avid scrabble player until the age of 100.
She is survived by her children, Jean Kaufman (Mike Bryan), James “Buddy” Cleaton, Teeter Longtain (C.J. Scheufens), Mary Mouton and Margaret Cleaton; siblings, Naomi Holloman and Frank L. Riling; 9 grandchildren, Randy LeBlanc, Renee Williams (Keith), Ramona Ortego (Keith), Nikki Welch (Brett), Amy Kay (Don), Karen Mouton, Leigh Humphries (Robert) Stephanie Zeve (Matt), and Sara Crosby (Simon); as well as 23 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jim Cleaton; siblings, Margie Pendarvis and George L. Riling; daughter-in-law, Gloria Cleaton; son-in-law, Bo Mouton; grandsons, Michael Cleaton, John Cleaton, Rory LeBlanc and Ross LeBlanc.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the wonderful companion and caregiver, Jeanette Ecter, along with the many sitters who enhanced her last years.
Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home on Monday, June 26, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m.
