Gloria Margaret Clement Trahan, 99, passed away peacefully at home with her children by her side. She was born in New Orleans on May 20, 1926 to L. Kennneth and Himelda Bahan Clement.
She moved to Lake Charles in 1939 where she graduated from Lake Charles High School. She then attended McNeese before transferring to L.S.U. where she obtained a bachelor's degree in education.
She remained a resident of Lake Charles until her death, except for a two-year period, May 1966 until May 1968, when she and her family- husband Quentin and all five children- moved to rural Normandy, France because Quentin had been transferred to France by his employer, Firestone. These turned out to be trying times for the family. The plan was that the children would learn to speak French over the course of the first summer and attend French schools, but it became apparent after the first few weeks of the school year that their French language skills were not adequate for the task. Gloria and Quentin made the difficult decision to place the four oldest children in boarding schools near Bournemouth in the south of England and Gloria home schooled the youngest, who was only six years old at the time.
The family moved back to Lake Charles in May 1968, and Gloria several years later returned to McNeese to obtain certification as a librarian. She then worked for a number of years as a librarian for the Calcasieu Parish School Board.
Those left to cherish her memory are son, Christopher M. Trahan (Patsy), her daughters, Marcia Plauche (Richie), Vanessa Bailes (John), and Mary Margaret "Mimi" Culpepper, her daughter-in- law, Susan Trahan, and her brother, Randolph J. Clement (Jean), 15 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Quentin J. Trahan, her son, Quentin C. Trahan, and her brother, L.K. Clement, Jr.
