Gloria Bumpus died November 13, 2016 in the comfort of her home near the people who loved her. She was 85. She fought cancer the way she fought all battles in life, fiercely and determined to never give up.
She began her life in Vinton, LA on June 9, 1931, born to Bobby and Lottie Gaudet. They moved to Lake Charles when she was a young child. She was a Lake Charles High School graduate where she played tennis and was a member of the Kiltie marching group. It is here that she met the love of her life, Clifford Bumpus. She remained a proud member of Wildcat Nation throughout her life.
Her early career was spent as a legal secretary that provided many of the talents she used in her real estate career. In 1976 she obtained her real estate license and thus began the career that spanned 40 years of service to families in Southwest Louisiana. At the age of 59 she started her own company, Gloria Bumpus Real Estate with her daughter, Gail and eventually her granddaughter, Sara. This year she was awarded the status of Realtor Emeritus by the National Association of Realtors for 40 years of valuable and lasting contributions to the real estate profession in the community. She was respected by her peers, admired by those who knew her, and was an inspiration to all. Her most memorable quality was her famous smile.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bobby and Lottie Gaudet, and her son, Ronnie Bumpus.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 65 years, Clifford Bumpus, three children, Daniel Bumpus and wife Olivia of Celebration, FL, Gail Byrley and husband Martin of Lake Charles, Karen Thomas and husband Rick of Austin, TX., brother, Jerome Gaudet and wife Barbara of Opelousas, LA., 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, November 18 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Home. There will be a scripture service at 6:30 PM. Visitation will resume at 8:30 am on Saturday until the time of service. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 19 at St. Martin de Porres Church at 10:00 am.
The family wishes to thank those special care givers, Jennifer Ballard, Tresa Leger, and Lisa Franklin. Also, thanks to Heart of Hospice nurses, Cortney Montgomery and Jen Quebedeaux, Dr. Carl Nabours, Dr. Michael Broussard, and Evangeline Home Health.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Anna Bumpus fund, payable to the Anna Catherine Benefit Account, 2129 Twin Circle Drive, Gonzales, LA 70737.
