Hancel Jay Hedrick, 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 16, 1944, in Charleston, West Virginia, to Dewey and Mildred Casto Hedrick.
Hancel dedicated many years of his life to public service, working as a police officer and in the sheriff's department. He was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Police, which allowed him to travel across the country with his beloved wife. In his free time, Hancel enjoyed working in his yard and took great pride in keeping it beautiful.
Known for his kind heart and servant spirit, Hancel loved helping others and treated everyone with fairness and respect. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory include his loving wife, Carol Marie Hebert Hedrick; daughter, Christie Marie Hedrick; grandchildren, Mariah Patterson, Hannah Patterson and her fiancé Tyler Young, and Jacob Patterson; great-grandson, Wade Patterson; sisters, Vada "Skip" Robinson and Sharon Kinney; sister-in-law, Carol Ann Hedrick; along with numerous loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Donald and Glen Hedrick; sister, Sona Young; and brothers-in-law, Bill Kinney, Gene Amory, Burton Young, and Bill Robinson.
Johnson Funeral Home has been entrusted with the cremation of Hancel Hedrick.
