Harry Newton Hooper, 92, of Moss Bluff was called Home on the second of October, 2020 in a local Hospital. He was a life-long member of Apostolic Temple Pentecostal Church in Lake Charles, LA. Mr. Hooper was born on October 23, 1927 in Lake Charles, La. He proudly served in the United States Merchant Marine on T-2 tankers during World War 11 and in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. At 17 he met the love of his life, Ophelia. After a whirlwind courtship, the two married and moved to Lake Charles. In 1957 they settled permanently in Moss Bluff where they raised their five children. Harry received the beautiful gift of the Holy Ghost in 1963 and it was then that his work for the Lord began. He became a prayer warrior who for years led Monday night prayer meetings at Apostolic Temple, with his strong, clear voice expressing his love for his savior and interceding for the needs of others. A strong and faithful servant of his Lord, he and his wife Opelia were generous with their time and resources always reaching out to others. His life was a testament of faithfulness and he served Him to the very end. Mr. Hooper was a longstanding member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 106 and travelled many miles constructing petroleum pipelines when he was not working at numerous local industries. In 1973 he and his wife opened El Ponchos, a Mexican restaurant on Ryan Street. Even after its closure in 1978, they continued to make their world-famous tamales by request. He enjoyed traveling, working his land with his Ford Jubilee tractor, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren Mr. Hooper is preceded in death by his parents Alfred Dave Hooper and Beulah Huval Hooper, step-mother Mildred Hooper, and by his brothers Pete Hooper, Dan Hooper, Curtis Hooper, Kenneth Hooper, Mack Hooper, Tim Hooper, and Bruce Hooper. Those left to cherish his memory are his children: Wanda (Sherman) Thigpen of Moss Bluff, Bobby (Ida) Hooper of Lake Charles, David (Colleen) Hooper of Lake Charles, Leah (Ricky) Romain of Ragley, and Katherine (Scott) Louviere of Lake Charles; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 1 great, great grandchild. A Celebration of Life will be held at Apostolic Temple, 2711 Prien Lake Road, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Reverends Rick Treece and Jordan Anderson will officiate. Visitation will begin Wednesday, October 7, 2020 from 4-8 and continue on Thursday from 8-9. The service will be held on October 8, 2020 at 9 am. Interment will be held at Ritchie Cemetery in Moss Bluff. The family asks that you respect social distancing and masks are requested for the visitation and funeral service. Military honors will be rendered for Mr. Hooper at the cemetery. The US Marines require masks to be worn at the graveside service.
