Helen Lois Bruno Brown, 75, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, May 3, 2024 with her family by her side.
She was born on August 20, 1948 to Louis and Ruth Young Bruno in Lake Charles, LA. The youngest of 11 children, Helen was a graduate of LaGrange High School. She met Curtis Brown in 1967 and they married in 1968. Together they raised two sons, Randall Keith and Jeffrey Lynn. They lived in Westlake for many years before moving to Maplewood, but their favorite home was their camp at Toledo Bend. There, she was able to truly embrace her love of gardening, where she planted dozens of rose bushes that she tended and pruned daily. Helen loved to cook for her boys, and the whole Bruno-Brown family loved her spaghetti and meatballs! Helen was the “hostess with the most-est” at the annual Bruno Family Fish Fry every spring at Toledo Bend. Her hobbies included arts and crafts, working puzzles, gardening (especially roses), traveling with family, catching beads at parades, reading and enjoying a cold beverage while sitting on her deck at the lake.
Helen was a dedicated nurse, starting with Internal Medicine in 1976, then Oncology in 1981. She retired in 2007. The compassion she had for those in her care was often reciprocated with thank you letters and cards, homemade food and generous gifts.
Those left to cherish her memory are, her beloved husband Curtis Brown; her sons, Randy and Jeff; her sisters, Wyonna Bruno Berzas, Delores Bruno Newcomb and Shirley Bruno Ferri; her brother, Jerry Bruno; and numerous nieces and nephews who all loved her dearly.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Stat Home Health, Elara home health, and Heart of Hospice, with special thanks to CNA’s Diane Watkins, Nicole Campbell and Regenia Manuel.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Louis Bruno, Jr., Bill Bruno and Robert Bruno; and her sisters, Betty Bruno Kingham, Marie Bruno Sosbe and Barbara Bruno Frost.
Her funeral service will be at 6:00 PM on Thursday, May 9, 2024 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. David Brown will officiate. Visitation will begin on Thursday at 3:00 PM and continue until the start of the service at 6:00 PM. Graveside service will be Friday May 10 at 10:00 AM in Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Jennings, LA. Cremation will be entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles.
