James W. Harlow

October 8, 1949 — October 29, 2025

James W. Harlow, 76, of Lake Charles, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a life rich in music, friendship, and love.

A lifelong musician, James began playing bass in high school with his very first band "Request Band", marking the start of a music career that spanned more than 60 years. Most of that time was spent performing with his group, "Silver Band," which, as his wife said, lasted "too many years to count." You name it, they played it - rock, blues, R&B - James could play it all, and he played it with passion and soul.

One evening while performing, James met the woman who would become the love of his life, Melissa. Music brought them together, and the two shared the next 18 years filled with laughter, love, and devotion.

When he wasn't on the road or on stage, James loved working with his hands as an avid car mechanic. He could often be found under the hood of a car, tinkering and fixing - just as happy there as he was holding a bass guitar. Above all else, James had a big heart. He was always ready to help anyone who needed it, and his kindness touched the lives of everyone who knew him.

James is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Melissa Harlow; stepson Joshua Cleveland; granddaughter Logan Cleveland; niece Lisa Little; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Elgin and Bernice Harlow and his sister, Dottie Harlow.

Cremation has been entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles.
