James Howard Harper, a beloved figure in the world of rodeo, passed away on March 26, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on August 29, 1938, in Dry Creek, Louisiana, James lived a full and vibrant life before settling in Iowa, LA.
James was a true entrepreneur starting his journey at the age of 21 with his first business, the Harper Lumber Company. His passion for Western culture led him to open James Harper's Cowboy Store on Ryan Street in Lake Charles, a venture that unfortunately met its end in a fire in 1985.
In the mid-70s, he teamed up with his lifelong friend Ralph Morgan to dive into the world of rodeo production, ultimately purchasing their first PRCA card in 1979. Their partnership flourished, leading to the establishment of Harper & Morgan Rodeo. In 1980 Harper & Morgan had their first stock voted to WNFR with stock still today going under the name Harper & Morgan. James was a driving force in the industry, holding positions such as the president of the Louisiana Rodeo Cowboys Association and serving on the board of PRCA as an advisor throughout the mid-90s.
The 1990’s was the peak of the rodeo company, where in 1990 Harper and Morgan was responsible for production and opening ceremonies for the WNFR. In 1994, he was part of a small group of contractors that helped change the modern bull riding scene forever, paving the way for what we know today as the PBR. In this time frame it is believed by many that James assembled the greatest herd of bucking bulls of all time. In the 90’s he had the most bulls voted to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo many years with over 15 voted.
Aside from rodeo, James was a lifelong entrepreneur with his longest endeavor being in the developing and contracting world. For the last 15 years with partner Jason Roussell they are responsible for building most of our local homes here in Iowa. James had a love for the circus and was often referred to as a "Carni." He enjoyed attending circus events so much that he attended one 3 weeks ago and he brought that vibrant energy into his rodeo productions, becoming quite the character in his own right. Most famously his slogan “The Greatest Show on Dirt” and introducing the Wheezer to the rodeo world.
James leaves behind his cherished family, including his son Howard Harper (Angie), daughter Debra Green (Gary), adopted son, Bill Harper, grandchildren JaElle Harper (Matt Christy), JayCee Harper, Cheyenne Harper (Chelsi), Maverick Harper, and Danielle Gentry, as well as great-grandchildren, Adaly, Riley, Rigby, Hazin and Asa. He is also survived by his sister, Marjorie Wooley (Jack).
To honor James’ incredible life, a Gathering of Friends will take place on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at 10:00 AM at the Harper Morgan Rodeo Arena in Iowa, followed by a Funeral Service at 12:00 PM, with Winston Quesenberry officiating. Cremation will follow the service under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home of Iowa. Pallbearers assisting in his service are, Jason, Carlton, Howard, Bill, Cheyenne, and Maverick.
James Howard Harper will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy in the rodeo community and the cherished memories he created will live on forever.
James was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene Harper; his parents, Howard and Reddie Harper; his siblings, Johnny Paterson, Thomas Harper.
