James Ray J.R. Brown

James “J.R.” Ray Brown, born in Cashpoint, Louisiana on January 14, 1928, son of the late Joseph Johnson Brown and Nora Lee Kelly Brown, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at the age of 95.
J.R. served honorably in the United States Navy from 1944 until 1954 and was an Admiral Orderly. He received numerous medals for his faithful service.
Following his military service, he worked as a truck driver until his retirement in 1993. In his spare time, J.R. enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. J.R. was a member of the El Riad Shriners in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
He is survived by his daughters, Charlene Tharp and husband, Tim of Lake Charles, and Winona “Jane” Wooden of Simi Valley, CA; daughter-in-law, Karen Brown of Waco, TX; grandchildren, Ashleigh Bunjes (Ryan Mosier), Bridget Mack (Matthew), Stephanie Anderson, Derek Brown (Amber), Donald Shadwell (Jill), David Aubrey, and Victoria “Vicki” Cavazo (Carlos); great-grandchildren, Briella Tharp, Amira and Memphis Neeley, Hailee Mack, Thane Brown, and Morgan and Cameron Shadwell.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Virginia Brown, son, James “Ronnie” Brown; grandson, Aaron Brown; siblings, Faye Maxine Booth, Otis Brown, Jack David “J.D.” Brown, Lula Mae Sullivan, Wayne Brown, and Claude Ralph Brown.
Funeral services are Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 11 a.m. in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home of Iowa. A burial will follow in Creel Cemetery under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home of Iowa. Visitation begins Wednesday in the funeral home at 10 a.m.
