James "Pop" Fontenot

September 29, 1938 — July 12, 2018

James Richard “Pop” Fontenot, 79, of Lake Charles, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday July 12, 2018, surrounded by his family.

 

James was a native of Mamou and a longtime resident of Lake Charles. While growing up, his family farmed all over Louisiana and Texas before moving to Lake Charles 62 years ago. He enjoyed a career in the grocery and produce business for the rest of his life. James enjoyed spending time not only hunting and fishing, raising and training beagle dogs, but also spending time with his family. James was very involved with his children’s lives, living life for the Lord by building a foundation of religion in his children and grandchildren. He was a mentor to many young boys by giving words of advice to them, but also teaching them skills. He was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church.

 

Preceding James in death are his parents, Curry Duke and Gussie Mae Young Fontenot; beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Jane Fontenot; brother, Harris Fontenot; and sister, Ruby Douglas. Those left to carry on his memory are his three children, Novika Abshire (John), Moss Bluff; Jody Fontenot, Lake Charles and Shelia Abshire (Curtis), Iowa; two sisters, Vine Guinn, Iowa and Carol Roberts, Monroe; seven grandchildren, John Abshire, Jr., Amanda Montou, Kenny Abshire, Mike Abshire, Mark Abshire, Justin Fontenot and Garrett Fontenot; nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

 

Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Saturday July 14 from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be observed at 11:00 AM at St. Margaret Catholic Church. Father Marcus Johnson will serve as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Consolata Cemetery.
