James Waddell Gunn

James Waddell ("Jimy") Gunn, died Thursday, May 21, 2015 at his home in Austin, TX. James was born on February 27, 1953 in Lake Charles, LA to Gordon ("Sonny") Gunn and Barbara Roberts Gunn Gayle. He was a graduate of Lagrange High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from USL. He was employed as an audio technician by Evangeline Cafe and the University of Texas. With his brother Gordon, he formed Gunn Brothers Sound Design and was an award-winning sound designer for theatre, including Capital City Theatre and Austin Playhouse, among others. He travelled the world as the tour manager and sound man for several bands, including Joe Ely, the Flatlanders, and the Dixie Chicks. He was a vocalist and played guitar with the band Crystal Flavola and was a founding member of the Krewe of Couche Couche Marching Trash Can Band in Lafayette, La. Jimy was a lover of life, literature, art, and music, a science fiction enthusiast, an excellent Cajun cook, and a diehard Saints fan. He was intelligent, creative, and a true original. His warmth and compassion earned him many lifelong friends. He left us much too early and will be greatly missed. He was also a long standing member of St. Michael and All Angels. He is survived by his loving mother, Barbara R. Gayle of Lake Charles; brother Gordon Gunn, sister-in-law Carol Gunn, and niece Annie Gunn of Austin, Texas and by his sister, Claire Gunn Manuel and brother-in-law Wayne Manuel of Slidell, Louisiana. He is preceded in death by his father, Gordon "Sonny" Gunn. Services will be at 10:00 AM Thursday, May 28, 2015 at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will resume Thursday from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. Burial of cremated remains will follow services at Consolata Cemetery. In addition, there will be a celebration of his life at Evangeline Cafe in Austin Texas, time and date to be announced. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to CARC or a charity of choice.
