Janet Louise Wharton Moore ‘Jam’ was born June 14th,1952 and passed away peacefully on October 18th, 2025, in Midland, Tx at the age of 73. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and quiet strength that will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
Janet, the eldest daughter of Toopie and Patty Wharton, grew up with a tight-knit family, in a home filled with love, in Lake Charles, La. From a very young age, she found joyful peace in time shared with loved ones, which naturally evolved into a devotion like no other to her own family. She poured her heart into raising children and was a constant, steady presence in their lives. When ‘the grands’ came around, she was positively overjoyed and embraced her role as ‘Jam’ - wholeheartedly.
Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and unconditional love — a place where stories were told, cookies were baked, and everyone knew they were treasured. She had a way of making people feel seen and heard, and her gentle wisdom was a gift to all who sought her counsel. Jam’s legacy will live on not only in her family, but also in the quiet selfless acts of kindness she gave so freely to others.
Her greatest love outside of family was for her horses. Her devotion to their care and companionship epitomizes just how rooted she was by their grace and grounding spirit.
Janet is survived by her [3] children: James DeVillier, Janise DeVillier Black (Adam), Joshua DeVillier (Amy), her stepchildren Stacy Scott and Christopher McClleland, her beloved grandchildren: Gatlin, Beau, Charlee, and Jack, as well as her siblings Joanie St Romain (PJ), Lloyd Wharton (Deborah), and Ralph Wharton (Robin). She is also remembered fondly by her many nieces and nephews and her dogs Sadie and Sassie. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Jean Ann.
A memorial service will be planned and held in Lake Charles where family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of her life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to SFS Equine Rescue & Animal Sanctuary in Lake Charles or St Jude’s Hospitals — causes close to her heart.
Jam was a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend who rode through life with strength and grace; may she now ride free.
