Janie Ruth Prycer

May 15, 1936 — December 28, 2018

Janie Ruth Prycer, 82, of Lake Charles, Louisiana and formerly of Houston, Texas passed away suddenly on Friday, December 28, 2018 in Lake Charles. Janie was born in Jacksonville, Texas. She raised her family in Shreveport, San Antonio, and Houston. She had resided in Houston until 2015 when she moved to Lake Charles to live with her daughter.

Janie had a thirst for knowledge, was politically minded, and was a believer in women’s advocacy.  She was well read and very informed as she was a big fan of PBS, and other television news. Throughout her life her favorite activities were writing children’s books, writing poetry, prose, painting and cooking.

In the days when most women were not in the workforce and with only a high school education, Janie worked her way up from hotel clerk to manager and then to a successful career as regional director in the hotel industry. She also owned and operated a motel in Marshall, Texas and owned a restaurant in Bossier, Louisiana.  She later worked for her son in the pool industry as his most valuable employee.

She accomplished all this while raising six children and three step children.

She was a woman of great strength and courage, but most of all, she will be remembered as our biggest cheerleader, always offering encouragement and giving unconditional love as mom, O.G., and friend.

Preceding Janie in death are her parents, Joseph Andrew and Ava Pear Porterfield Prycer, her infant daughter Mary Louise Richard, and her son Timothy Allen Richard. She leaves, to honor and cherish her memories, her children, Denise Sanford (Steve), Lake Charles; J.R. Richard (Julie), Sealy, Texas; Michael Richard (Shay), Spring, Texas; Ricky Richard, Sealy, Texas; Kathy Affrunti, Northport, NY; step children Eddie Mullen (Karen), Nacogdoches, Texas; Lisa Salisbury, Fort Bragg, California, and Tina Mullen (Miguel Cordova), Greenbrae, California. Janie also leaves 21 grandkids and 27 great grand kids who lovingly called her O.G. as well as a number of friends she considered family.

A gathering of family and friends will begin at 1pm on Saturday, February 9that the home of J.R. and Julie Richard, 10027 River Ranch East, Sealy, Texas 77474. The Celebration of Life will conclude at 3pm.
