Jerry Whatley

December 18, 1950 — December 2, 2024

Jerry Gene Whatley, 73, of Lake Charles, LA, passed away peacefully at his home in Lake Charles, surrounded by his immediate family in the early morning hours of Monday, December 2nd.

Jerry was born on December 18th, 1950, to James and Esther Whatley in Lake Providence, La. He was the fifth and last child and was a twin to his sister, Nancy. Jerry grew up in Lake Providence, LA, where he was instilled with a strong work ethic and a love for service and agriculture. He worked hard to provide for his family on the farm and graduated from Lake Providence High School with honors. He later pursued these interests and went on to attend Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where he obtained his degree in Animal Science and later a Masters in Extension Education. Jerry had a natural talent for leadership and music as well and was President of the LSU Block and Bridle Club and played in the LSU Marching Band as a snare drummer. Jerry began his 4-H work as an agent in Kentucky while living with his brother Tommy, and continued on to East Caroll, and then to Calcasieu Parish where he met his future wife Kathy in 1977, and served most of his time, from 1974-1983. He then served in Extension as a County Agent from 1983 until his retirement in 2009. His dedication, and love for service and for others was seen in his many efforts in his time with Extension, including serving as Southwest District Livestock Show manager, advisor, and Rodeo Board of Directors, and later beginning the Southwest District Hall of Fame Program; as well as serving in multiple community roles and boards. He was recognized as the Honorary Sales Chairman in 2013, and inducted into the Louisiana 4-H Hall of Fame in 2020 for his tireless dedication to the 4-H program across Southwest Louisiana and in the state.

Jerry received numerous awards and recognition throughout his life for his career but it was his relationships and helpfulness to others that he prized the most. He was a man of faith and conviction and was an active member of Iowa First Baptist Church and Trinity Baptist Church. He had a strong love for the Lord and a passion for the gospel, compassion for others, and stood for Biblical values. He was known for his outspoken stance for truth, as well as his storytelling abilities, kindness, servant's heart, and sense of humor. He will leave a legacy of service, gentleness, faith, and humility, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 6th, at 2:00pm at Trinity Baptist Church in Lake Charles, to celebrate the life of Jerry with a gathering beginning at 12:00 PM. The family will receive family and friends from 4:00 PM until 8:00 pm, at Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles on Lake Street, on Thursday, December 5th. Burial will follow in Pinehill Cemetery in Iowa.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Esther and siblings, Sylvia, Jim, and Nancy.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy of Lake Charles; his four children, Nicole and her husband Marshall of Roanoke, Va, Jordan and his wife Patricia of Baton Rouge, La, Josh and his life Kali, and Jake and his wife Paige all of Lake Charles, La; his15 grandchildren; and his brother, Tommy Whatley and his wife Judy, of Campbellsville, Kentucky.
