John Jewell, 76, of Sulphur passed away on April 24, 2026 with his wife by his side.
John was an avid student of the Word—“a Berean,” as his pastor often called him. He loved the Bible and chose to make it the center of his life, always searching for truth and understanding.
His main love was fishing. It was where he found peace. He also enjoyed playing golf for many years, up until he was no longer able.
In his younger years, John was a talented baseball player and a great pitcher. He played several years with Zeb Johnson as his catcher. He earned a scholarship to play baseball at McNeese and accepted it. After one semester, with the Vietnam conflict rising, John chose to answer the call to serve and enlisted in the United States Navy.
After his time in the service, he met someone to share his journey with growth and knowledge of the Bible, Gail, and the two shared 40 years together.
He is survived by his wife of forty years, Gail Jewell; his children and stepchildren, Brooke Harralson (Tyler), Doug Rivet (Olivia), Doanie Perry (Coby), and Ryan Doucet (Tracy); 10 grandchildren; as well as his birth mother and eight brothers, whom he was grateful to have recently discovered.
He was preceded in death by his parents Francis Ferdinand II and Ann Sue Sasser Jewell, and his brother, “Jimbo” Jewell.
A graveside service for John will be Friday, May 1, 2026 at 11 AM at the Southwest Louisiana Veteran’s Cemetery in Jennings, LA.
John will be remembered as a kind man who loved his family, and his faith.
