It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joseph "Pop" Shirley Bertrand, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend. Joseph was born on June 18, 1936, in Eunice, Louisiana, and he peacefully left us on September 20, 2025, at the age of 89, due to natural causes.
Joseph, known to many as Joe, was an operator in the aluminum industry and took immense pride in his work. He was a dedicated family man who cherished the time spent with his loved ones. Joe was a true outdoorsman at heart, enjoying camping and fishing. He could often be found working in his yard, taking pleasure in the simple joys of life. Joe was also a loyal fan of high school football, regularly attending games at both Iowa and Basile high schools.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Margaret Bertrand; his sons, David (Christine) Marcantel and Jerome (Vicki) Sonnier; his daughters, Letha Bertrand, Nanette (Richard) Castille, and Christine (Mike Fontenot) Leger; his brothers, Roland "Perch" (Henrietta) Bertrand and Collins (Althea) Bertrand; his sister, Jeanette (Donald) Fontenot; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Johnson Funeral Home of Iowa on Thursday, September 25, 2025 at 12:00 PM, and Joe will be laid to rest at 1:30 PM at Consolata Cemetery in Lake Charles. A public viewing will be held on Wednesday from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM, and will resume on Thursday at 10:00 AM until the time of service.
In this time of grief, we celebrate Joe's life and the lasting impact he made on all who knew him. He will forever remain in our hearts.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Eunice Courville Bertrand; sons, Latch Ramour, and Jimmie Marcantel; daughter, Marilyn Reed; and his sister, Joyce Arceneaux.
Pallbearers will be Jerome Sonnier, Leland Doman, John Marcantel, Collin Trahan, Nieson Boudoin, and Jeremy Bordelon. Honorary pallbearer will be Roland Bertrand.
