Larry Gil Huber, Sr. passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on May 11, 2021 after fighting a courageous battle against many health issues.
He was born August 1, 1957 in Lake Charles, LA to Sam and Ramona Huber and he lived in Moss Bluff, LA.
He was a survivor, surviving when many doctors did not expect him to live, surprising them all. His faith, family and love are what he said allowed him to continue when all seemed lost.
He was an athlete growing up, and always excelled at whatever sport he participated in. He loved playing baseball, but his greatest love was distance running, which taught him how to continue when it seemed there was nothing left to give. As a cross country runner, he made the Lake Charles High School Hall of Fame. He always remembered Curt Burton, Charlie Kaough, Mike Murphy, Albert Deville, Frank Abate, and Alvin Hayes, who along with him won the Louisiana 4A (which was the top classification) State Cross Country Championship for Lake Charles High School, by the largest winning margin ever attained. They were guided by Coach Larry Hunter, who he always considered one of the most inspirational men in his life.
Larry served in the U.S. Navy for 9 years and loved his country. He always said he learned many things while serving in the military which helped him succeed in all his life endeavors.
He was also the proud co-owner of Control Concepts, LLC. One of his proudest achievements was that both of his sons pursued the same career path he chose. It made him extremely proud, and he bragged on them both every chance he got.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and truly enjoyed his times at the deer lease with his son, Chad, and friends, and fishing with his business partner David and friend Randy. He also enjoyed his time spent with, and his conversations with his son Larry Jr.
During his life he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and most especially a loving grandfather. His wife was his ROCK during his medical journey, exhibiting what love is really all about. She was his best friend, and never complained, but continually did whatever was necessary to make his life a great one. He loved her with all his being, and she blessed him with two fantastic sons. His two sons and his daughter-in-law were another source of his strength, and he loved them with all his heart. He loved his granddaughters “to the moon and back”. He was a PawPaw and spoiled them whenever he got the chance. Larry came from a large family growing up, and all his brothers and sisters were always there when they were needed. He loved them all.
Larry was preceded in death by his grandparents, his mother Ramona, father Sam, brother Mark, and brother Philip.
He is survived by his loving wife Cathy of 36 years, sons Chad (Samantha) and Larry Jr., his granddaughters Emma and Baylee, and brother Mike (Mary Beth), sister Gail (Arnold), brother David (GiGi), brother Chuck (Elaine), sister Hollie (Steve), sister Natalie (Cecil), brother Todd (Vickie), and brother Paul (Christina), numerous nieces and nephews, and his extended family.
He would like to thank all his doctors and nurses who treated him over the years. A special thanks to Dr. Fontenot, Dr. Ewane, Dr. Selim, Dr. Mulhearn, Dr. Safi, Dr. Afifi, Dr. Khan, and RN Skylee Myers.
His funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 17, 2021 at Johnson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff. Rev. Aubrey Guilbeau will officiate. Burial will follow the service in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Johnson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff Monday from 10 a.m. until the beginning of the service.
