Larry Mitchell

September 30, 1947 — July 1, 2025

Larry Vernon Mitchell, age 77, of Sulphur, La. passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2025. He was born September 30, 1947 in Waco, Texas to the late Charles and Dorothy Mitchell.

After graduating from Sam Rayburn High School in Pasadena, Texas, he attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana on a full ride scholarship where he lettered in football. He was a defensive guard for the 1968 Gulf States Conference Championship team, and had to prevail against now-famous quarterbacks Terry Bradshaw and Roger Staubach. Once he graduated from USL, he met and married the love of his life, started a family, coached football and track and taught science for over 40 years at both high school and junior high level.

Everyone who knew him described him as loving, patient, and kind. He loved sports and being outdoors. Larry had a great sense of humor and was always joking. He liked to sneak sweets and Dr Pepper. His kids, nieces, and nephew remember fondly how he took them on spontaneous trips to his school gym, the track, local water parks, the city pool, or the beach. He was present for every school program, dance recital, and kid’s sporting event, usually with a large camcorder in tow. Later in life, he enjoyed taking his grandchildren to parks, pools, and other outings and watching them play. His Texas Rangers, Louisiana Roughriders, and Texas Roughriders will miss his teasing and joking.

Larry is survived and missed by his wife of 52 years, Lynn, his children, Lynsey, Tyler (Kristen), and Cade (Nicole). Forever cherished by his ten grandchildren, Taylar, Alyson, Jace, Henry, Mason, Charlie, Max, Annalisa, Antoinette, and Louis. His brother, Terry (Rocky), his sister-in-law, Judy, and his nieces and nephew: Tiffany, Summer, Brittany, Tracy & Jeff.

They share this loss with many other loving family members and friends.

Larry found solace in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, where the Funeral Requiem Mass will be held on Friday, July 11th at 10 am. A Rosary will be prayed in his name beforehand at 9:30 am. A reception will be held after Mass with the location to be announced later.
