Larry W. Smith, 75, a beloved husband, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025 with his wife by his side. Born in Tullahoma, Tennessee, Larry moved to Lake Charles in 1977 to begin his career at McNeese State University, a move that would shape the rest of his life and legacy.
In 1985, Larry and his wife began Lake Charles Pre-Sort, a business they proudly owned and operated together. Larry's love story began years earlier at Penn State University, where he met the love of his life. Their bond began in a simple car ride and together they built a marriage that lasted 52 years.
Larry was a man of many passions. A fly fisherman and fisherman at heart, he found joy on the water. He also loved cooking and baking, and was especially known for his famous blueberry scones, which became a favorite among family and friends. A huge fan of Formula 1, NASCAR, and IndyCar, Larry enjoyed following races every chance that he got.
Larry was a people person through and through-he never met a stranger and was a friend to all. His generosity, warmth, and good humor left an impression on everyone he encountered.
Deeply involved in Southwest Louisiana, Larry gave his time and energy to many organizations. He was a former president of the Lake Charles Fishing Club, served on the board of the Lake Charles Children's Museum, was active with the Chief Executive Organization, Legacy member of the McNeese Banners Committee, Catholic Charities, and the Mail Advertising Association. He was also a proud member of Krewe des Fêteurs and Krewe des Famile.
Larry is survived by his wife of 52 years; his sister-in-law, Mrs. Genevieve Janawitz; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nephews who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents Claud Wilford Smith, and Dorothy Nell Allmon Smith; his brother, Gary Keith Smith; his brother-in-law, William J. Janawitz, sister-in-laws Rosemary Campbell and Frankie Mossburg.
