Laura Richard
Lake Charles –Laura Richard was called home to the Lord on Thursday, October 16, 2014 after a 13 month battle with lung cancer.
She was born Laura Mae Manuel, the 4th child of Eddie and Tholize O’pry Manuel on Christmas Eve of 1937, at home on their Farm on the western prairie of Mamou, Louisiana.
She graduated from Mamou High School, and attended college. She was married twice, first to W. T. Kelly of Oakdale, Louisiana and then to Ursa James Richard of Basile, Louisiana.
She was the owner of La Place de Liqueur, Old Town Store, and most notable as Miss Laura, the proprietor of the Sports Tavern. She was the manager of The Lori Apartments during her many years as a resident of Laredo, Texas
She was preceded in death, by her daughter Phoebe, her parents, sisters, Mary Hazel Manuel and Francis Fontenot and brother, Harold J. Manuel, all of Mamou, as well as “Patty Cake”, her loving Yorkshire Terrier companion of so many years.
Those left to cherish her memory include her four children; Benny Richard (Patsy) of Hayes, Louise “Shelly” LeBlanc (Ray) of Lake Charles, Kent (Gabriela) Richard of Laredo, Texas and Chad Richard of Sulphur; two step-daughters, Liz (Kenneth) Johnson and Kay (Darwin) Christ of Basile; along with 12 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren, her god children, Ted Fontenot and Ferrel Manuel; many nieces, nephews, and countless other friends and family.
