It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lefty James Bourriague, who left this world peacefully on October 28, 2026, in Sulphur, Louisiana, at the age of 66. Born on April 13, 1960, in Creole, Louisiana, Lefty was known for his warm heart, compassionate nature, and unwavering dedication to others.
A proud United States Navy veteran, Lefty dedicated his life to serving others, both in uniform and through his everyday actions. He possessed a remarkable gift for caring for those around him, spending countless hours as a caregiver to the sick and elderly. His gentle spirit, kindness, and compassion touched the lives of many, making a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know him.
Lefty was a true people person, effortlessly turning strangers into friends with his infectious smile and genuine laughter. He cherished friendships deeply and embodied the spirit of community wherever he went. He found joy in music and dancing, often bringing light to gatherings with his love for life. Whether he was cooking a delicious meal or basking in the company of family and friends, Lefty understood the importance of savoring life's simple pleasures. His beloved dog, Ginger, was a constant source of companionship, bringing him much happiness.
Above all, Lefty held a profound love for his mother, whose memory he cherished dearly throughout his life. His devotion to her was a testament to the loyalty and tenderness that defined him.
Lefty's Catholic faith served as a guiding light throughout his life, providing him with strength, comfort, and peace. In the later stages of his life, when travel became difficult, he made it a point to connect with his loved ones daily through phone calls, ensuring that those he cared for never felt forgotten.
Lefty is survived by his best friend and caregiver, Chris Simon, his loving siblings, including sister, Mary Ellis (Eric), brother Edward Bourriague (Tabatha), sister Donna Verzwyvelt (John), and sister Helen Conner (Duke), and numerous nieces and nephews. His legacy of kindness, compassion, laughter, friendship, and unconditional love will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on Monday, November 2, 2026, at 1:00 PM. Prior to the service, a gathering of friends will take place at Johnson Funeral Home of Iowa, starting at 10:00 AM until 12:30 PM., with a rosary recited at 12:00 PM. Pallbearers will be Eric Ellis, Ryan Ellis, Colin Mearse, Caden Mearse, Cameron Mearse, Colby Leger, and Andrew Phillips.
Though Lefty may no longer be physically present among us, his spirit will live on through the countless lives he touched. May he rest peacefully in the loving arms of our Lord, reunited with those who went before him, and may perpetual light shine upon him. Lefty will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
