Leonard Bernard Pousson

Leonard Bernard Pousson, 92, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026 at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings where he had been residing. Leonard was born in Iota, Louisiana on January 30, 1934, the seventh of eight children to Pierre and Lydia Broussard Pousson. He graduated from St. Francis Catholic School in 1952 and was the class salutatorian his senior year. 

Leonard served in the U. S. Coast Guard for four years during the Korean War era and was given an Honorable Discharge, Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Leonard then signed up for U.S. Coast Guard Reserve out of New Orleans. Upon leaving the service, he worked at Continental Oil Company for over 25 years as an Operator in their Marine Operations area until his retirement.

While working at Conoco, Leonard also worked alongside his father and his brother, Harris, on a rice and soybean farm that they owned in Iowa, Louisiana. Leonard also built and managed the Contraband Arms Apartments in Lake Charles. 

Leonard's hobbies were dancing, especially jitterbug, listening to good Cajun music, going to farm equipment auctions, duck hunting, barbequing, watching sports with his sister (affectionately known as Dixie) and attending softball games to watch his great nieces play. Leonard loved family events and although he had no children of his own, he had 21 nieces and nephews who thoroughly enjoyed spending time with him. Leonard enjoyed trips to Hawaii with his sisters and to Talladega with several of his nephews, which was a highlight in his life. After retiring, he bought a farm in the Chloe community near Iowa and raised cattle for several years.

A devout Catholic, Leonard attended St. Raphael Catholic Church in Iowa, LA.

Leonard leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Pierre and Lydia Pousson, and his siblings, Verda Baldassari, Milfred Pousson, Lubert "Joe" Pousson, Harris Pousson, Cornelia "Connie" Watson, Norma Pettijohn and Barbara "Bobbie" Ogea. He was also preceded in death by two nephews, Warren Swann and Paul Pettijohn.

Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles on Monday, July 13, 2026 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a rosary at 6:00 PM. On Tuesday, July 14, 2026 a visitation will begin at 9:00 AM at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Iowa prior to the Mass beginning at 10:00AM. Father Anthony Fontenot will officiate. Following the Mass, his ashes will be brought to the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Jennings for interment with Military Honors. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Southwest Louisiana Veteran's Home, 1610 Evangeline Rd., Jennings, LA, 70546.

Special thanks to his nieces and nephews and their families for many years of visiting and caring for their beloved uncle, particularly after the hurricanes and any time he required medical care. The family also wishes to thank the staff of Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home for the special care they gave our uncle during his final months.
