Joseph Leroy Leger, 75, of Lake Charles, died in the comfort of his home on Sunday July 5, 2015 surrounded by his beloved family. Leroy was a native of Church Point and resided in Lake Charles for most of his life. He learned to play the drums at the age of 13 when his father, Bobby Leger, needed a drummer for his Cajun-French band. Since that time, he has played in many different bands and was inducted into the Cajun French Music Association Hall of Fame. He spent seventeen years as a barber, and retired from the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury as a Field Appraiser for the Assessor's office. He was a member of our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, where he faithfully served as an usher for many years. Leroy enjoyed life and his family. He took many rides with his wife as a member of the Gold Wings Road Riders Association and was a past chapter director for the Lake Charles chapter. Leroy was a HAM radio operator under frequency KM5SM. As a member of Senior Circle, he and his wife traveled with friends as often as they could. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Ruth Fontenot Leger; son, Kevin Leger and wife Beth, Powder Springs, GA; daughters, Rachel Miller and husband Richard, Lake Charles and Linda Farber and husband Steve, Moss Bluff; brother, Harry Lee Leger and wife Barbara, Sulphur; and sisters, Diane Leger, Denver, CO and Jackie Landry and husband Edward, Welsh; nine grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews and extended family. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 1:30 on Tuesday July 7, 2015 at Johnson Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 1:30 PM led by Deacon Glenn Viau. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:30 PM at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic church with Monsignor Sedita and Father Nathan Long serving as celebrants. Private family burial services will be at Consolata cemetery at a later date.
