Margaret "Margie" Huber Heard

March 13, 1951 — October 21, 2016

Margaret “Margie” Huber Heard, 65, died Friday, October 21, 2016, in her residence, following a brave battle with cancer.

Born to Holley Heard and Margaret Huber “Peggy” Caire, Margie was a lifelong resident of Lake Charles.  She was a 1969 graduate of LaGrange High School, where she was as a Gatorette.  She was a 1972 graduate of McNeese State University, receiving her degree in Early Childhood Education and going on to teach at Mill Street Elementary from 1973 until 1976.   Margie sold real estate with her father through his agency, the Holley Heard Real Estate Agency, from 1977 until 1979, when she returned to MSU and earned her Masters’ Degree in Counseling.  Margie was a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor, affiliated with Christus St. Patrick Hospital Recovery Center and Palmetto Addiction Recovery Center.  She counseled people with addictions to help them work through and overcome those addictions. She also served on the Board of Directors for both the Lake Charles Children’s Museum and Camp Wi-Ta-Wentin.  Margie was a member of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church and a member of A.C.T.S. (Adoration Community Theology and Service Retreat Program).  She felt blessed to be able to make a meaningful pilgrimage with the “Come, Holy Spirit” group to Lourdes, France last year, after having received her diagnosis.  Margie was stubborn, hard-headed, and strong-willed, as anyone who knew her would agree.  She was also loving and genuine and a blessing to those with whom she shared her amazing life.

Those left to cherish her memory are daughters, Lauren “Laurie” Heard Moffett and Holly Heard Peterson and husband Nick, of Lake Charles; mother, Peggy Huber Caire; sister, Julie Heard Quarles, of Roswell, Georgia; and grandchildren, Madison Moffett and Scotti Moffett.

Margie was preceded in death by her son Cody “Grebe” Scobee Heard; her father Holley Heard; her stepfather Dr. John B. “Jack” Caire; and her beloved dog “Codita.”.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Lake Charles under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.  The Very Reverend Anthony Fontenot will officiate.  Entombment will be at Consolata Cemetery.  Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday, October 24, from 5 until 9 p.m., with a rosary to be recited at 6 p.m., and will resume on Tuesday at 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

The family would like to express their love and gratitude to Margie’s dear friends who were more like family,  “the Bourre’ girls,” for their loyalty and dedication and loving support and encouragement during Margie’s illness, and to all of her amazing caretakers who became dear friends, especially Billie Jo Armentor.
